Career Progression at C&D!

Are you a Speech and Language Therapist looking to take on new responsibilities and challenges in your next role? Are you wondering what progression might look like in the private sector?

One of our therapists in the South West, Sophie, started a new role this year as a Senior Speech and Language Therapist. In this blog, Sophie will be sharing what it’s been like starting this new role at C&D!

In your own words, can you summarise how your new role differs to your previous role?

My new role now consists of more managerial duties which I am really enjoying as a new challenge. I am glad that I am still able to balance my week with working in schools, nurseries and client’s homes as well as having time for supervision, CPD and projects.

Have you been given the time to manage your new responsibilities?

Yes! It’s great to know that our timetable can be flexible enough to fit in new responsibilities. I now work some weeks in the school holidays so I can catch up with managerial duties without having to eat into my schools/client’s time.

Has C&D been open to any new ideas you had?

Definitely – during the lockdown period when we were all working from home, it took a lot of time to prep for teletherapy sessions. Therefore, we decided to create session plans which we can all share with each other which we still use in face to face sessions. My idea to create ‘pick up and go’ plans was listened to and I had the support to implement it.

What are you enjoying most about your new role?

I really enjoy doing supervision with my colleagues. A major reason for me becoming a Speech and Language Therapist was to help people and it’s been great developing that skill to helping my team members too. It’s also a great way to get to know your colleagues better and for them to get to know me better.

Has it been challenging starting a new role at C&D?

Every time I am not sure about something or need to talk something through, I feel very supported by my supervisor and manager. Even though our teams are far apart in distance, someone is always only a phonecall or email away.

Would you recommend working for C&D as a more experienced therapist?

I would definitely recommend working for C&D – I feel like I have been able to progress from a recently qualified therapist to gradually being given more and more responsibilities whilst always feeling supported by my team.
