Libraries - bringing us closer to completing World Book Day’s mission!

Did you know that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income? Today is World Book Day and the mission of this day is to promote reading for pleasure in children and young people (read more here: About World Book Day).

As Speech and Language Therapists, we are big fans of World Book day! Reading or listening to stories has a big impact on children’s vocabulary and narrative skills. It’s also a lovely way to spend time with young children as it offers some special one-to-one time, children can enjoy and chat about the book with you! The benefits still stand even if we don’t read the words and just spend time chatting about the pictures with young children. Whilst children may not enjoy reading with us as much as they get older, the benefits for their language development still stand so we want to promote a love of reading from a young age.

But how can we promote a love of reading from a young age?

We wanted to take some time today to highlight an amazing, free resource in our local communities – Libraries!!!

Having access to a safe, warm and comfortable space in which to access and read free books makes it a lot easier to read to children from a young age. Libraries are often underused but they are a valuable resource within our communities and by making the library part of your child’s routine you’ll be bringing them a few steps closer to a life-long love of reading!
